Fact Sheet
Why
Shold I Brush my Pet's Teeth?
Daily
tooth brushing is the gold standard of oral hygiene for
both humans and
pets. Daily tooth brushing removes
dental plaque. Plaque is an irritating, slimy, smelly,
accumulation of bacteria on the teeth. Getting rid of it
every day will help prevent it from hardening into calculus
or tartar. Left unchecked, dental calculus or tartar will
further irritate the gums causing infection that will progress
to destroy the attachment around your pet's teeth. In addition
to pain and lost teeth, infection under the gum line can
spread to the liver, kidneys, and heart.
Recently, a new pet oral hygiene product called OraVet has
been introduced. OraVet is barrier sealant which prevents
bacteria from sticking to the teeth in the first place. Initial
studies suggest that applying OraVet to a pet’s teeth once
a week - after a professional cleaning – may be as effective
as every-other-day tooth brushing.
